Copyright Guidelines
Downloading Materials
If the item offers a download option, read and agree to the conditions presented
in the download request form. The download request form grants permission to
use the item provided the specified conditions are satisfied. No further contact
is required.
Requesting Use
To use materials for which www.byways.org and www.bywaysonline.org do not
provide a download option, follow the general guidelines below.
- First, determine if the item can be used.

Materials copyrighted by the National Scenic Byways Online program or staff may be used
under the conditions in items 4 and 5 following, as applicable.
Other copyrighted materials may or may not be used, depending
on the use conditions of the item.
If you are unable to find the use conditions, submit a request as described below.
Materials, such as featured articles, descriptions, maps, or graphics,
that do not have copyright notices associated with them, are implicitly copyrighted
to the National Scenic Byways Program. They may be used under the conditions in
items 4 and 5 following, as applicable.

Next, locate and identify the item. The following information is required:
- URL of the page where the item is displayed
- Description of the item, including caption, title, and author (if applicable.)

Submit a request via email. The request should include the identification information from #1,
as well as the following:
- Name and contact information of the person requesting the item
- Proposed use of the item

If the item is to be used on a website, then we request that
the copyright is shown near the item
the NSB program or NSBO is credited as the source of the item
the site contain a link to www.byways.org
where applicable, the site contain the following description of the NSB program
"The National Scenic Byways Program recognizes highways
that are outstanding examples of our nation's beauty, history,
culture, and recreational experience by designating them as
All-American Roads and National Scenic Byways. The roads
being featured were designated by the Secretary of
Transportation from nominations submitted by the states
and federal land management agencies. These designations
provide a compass for people from all over the world to
explore America's treasured open roads."
If a member of the NSB team requests it, NSBO staff should be able
to preview the website, specifically the use of the NSB materials,
before the items are made visible to the public.
If the item is to be used on a brochure, article, or any other publication, we request that
the copyright is shown near the item
the NSB program or NSBO is credited as the source of the item
there is a reference to the www.byways.org web site
If a member of the NSB team requests it, NSB staff should be able to review the publication before it is finalized and distributed.
